About Co-op member farmers of Kenya
The Kiunyu Coffee Factory was established in the 1960s in the Kirinyaga district of the Kenya highlands. It's one of two coffee "factories"—wet mills—where the 3,000+ members of the Karithathi Farmer Cooperative Society bring their harvests for processing. 99% of the coffee grown here is of the SL34 variety—an exceptionally flavorful though disease-prone hybrid that thrives in higher altitudes with plentiful rainfall.
At Kiunyu factory, water is pumped from the Karithathi river to reservoir tanks for pulping and recirculation. After pulping, the coffee is fermented overnight before being cleaned, soaked, and spread out on raised beds for drying. The fermented coffee is washed manually in the fermentation tank itself or in channels with the help of centrifugal pumps or other machines.

PT's Coffee Roasting Co.
Topeka Kansas, 1993: an unlikely place and time for one of the most groundbreaking Direct Trade coffee companies in the world to be founded, but that's just what Fred Polzin and Jeff Taylor did. PT's Coffee Roasting Co.'s slogan is, "Without the love, it's just coffee.", and they certainly live up to it. (In fact, Jeff married a Colombian coffee pro, Maritza, now Director of Quality Control for PT's).
PT's Coffee Roasting Co. has won many awards, including Roast Magazine's 2009 "Roaster of the Year" and a 2012 Good Food Award medal. Building on a history so solid, PT's is pushing into the future of the coffee industry with promise and momentum.
