Meet Smallholder producers

Kurimi takes its name—and its inspiration—from an Amharic reference to excellence. Certainly some of the world’s most excellent coffees come out of the Yirgacheffe region of Ethiopia, where coffee grows wild in the hill country. Since the first washing station built in the 1970s revealed the astounding flavors and quality of washed Yirgacheffe coffee, it’s become the standard for most of southern Ethiopia, rather than the traditional sun-dried process still used in other parts of the country.

Jasmine and lemongrass are some of the flavor notes revered in coffees from this area, and this one from growers near Chelbesa is a beautiful example of washed coffee done right.

Gedeo Zone, Ethiopia

The Gedeo zone in the southwest of Ethiopia, is the homeland of the Gedeo people. Lying about 369 long kilometers from Addis Ababa on dusty and often difficult roads, this zone occupies a narrow strip of the Ethiopian highlands on the Eastern Escarpment and includes the town of Yirgacheffe itself. Gedeo is bordered by Sidama on the north, and encircled on the other three sides by the Oromia region.

In Gedeo, Yirgacheffe, approximately 25,000 local coffee smallholders bring their cherries to washing stations for processing. Inter-tribal conflicts in late 2016 resulted in extensive property damage through fire and vandalism, with many key mills rendered inoperative. Furthermore, a rare late frost damaged thousands of hectares of coffee. Resilient and hopeful, the Gedeo people are forging ahead, producing natural coffees while working to repair washing facilities.

Founded in 1995, this Chicago-based institution got its start roasting on vintage equipment within its first coffeebar. At the time, finding great tasting, freshly roasted coffee was surprisingly elusive. So, Doug Zell and Emily Mange decided to do something about it. They didn’t set out to change the world, just a small corner of it, and they certainly did just that, pioneering Direct Trade practices in the coffee industry before that really became a thing. Because of this, they were able to develop and source exclusive, remarkable coffees not found elsewhere.

Fast forward to today: with a focus on consistency, quality, and sustainability, Intelligentsia continues to be an industry pioneer, traveling the world to source the finest specialty coffee and roasting those beans at their Chicago and Los Angeles locations. True to their original quest, they believe that coffee in all its forms—whole bean, brewed, and espresso—should be an approachable, accessible luxury. For Intelligentsia, making coffee a memorable addition to any experience and making the act of preparing and enjoying a cup of coffee an experience in and of itself are key passions.
