Coffee Description

This coffee launches with a burst of grapefruit-and-orange paired with hibiscus and sweet black cherry. In the cup, all sorts of citrus and florals swirl, undergirded by savory notes, a cinnamon-ginger combo, and plum with an overarching sweetness. Big-bodied, crisply acidic, and nicely balanced, this offering remains full of flavor from fresh-brewed to cool in the cup.

About Boyce Harries of Kenya

Though the Harries family has been growing coffee at Chania Estate since 1904, it was after Peter Allen Harries returned from WWII that he and his wife, Rowena bought a 36-hectare plot 5 miles from Chania. They named it Oreti, after the New Zealand beach of Rowena’s homeland. Fast-forward nearly 60 years, and in 2004, Peter’s grandson, Boyce returned from college and now oversees both estates.

40 permanent employees work for Boyce, many having worked beside 3 generations of the Harries family, and much of their seasonal workforce returns year after year as well. The employees have their own self-elected committee which meets on a monthly basis to discuss community safety, social, and health matters. Besides caring for their own workers, the Harries family sows into the local community as well. They’ve donated land to the Thika Municipal Council and co-founded the Wabeni Technical Institute, which teaches practical skills such as dressmaking, mechanics, and carpentry.

Nossa Familia Coffee

Frustration and pride may seem like strange bedfellows, but when Brazilian-born Augusto Carvalho Dias Carneiro (bottom left in the team photo) became disillusioned with engineering, his thoughts and heart turned to his family’s award-winning coffee farms in the Minas Gerais region of Brazil, where he grew up and his family has grown coffee for over a hundred years.

Nossa Familia, "Our Family" was born in 2004 as a way to share his family coffee with Portland. At first, Nossa partnered with a local Portland roaster and built up a loyal following, then opened their own roastery in 2012 and an Espresso Bar in 2013. Nossa Familia recently became Oregon's first certified B Corp roaster, earning a certification that recognizes the hard work and love that roots this family business.
