Coffee Description
Occasionally you just happen to be at the right place at the right time. That's the case in how we came about sourcing coffee from producer Johany Quilindo. In the early summer of 2019, we were on our regular visit to the community of San Sebastian De La Plata in Huila Colombia. We visited the warehouse where we've cupped samples from hundreds of local producers for more than a decade now. During that time we have identified about 3 dozen producers from the community that tends to produce better quality lots week after week. We know the outstanding producers in the community well, which is why it came as a big surprise to come across Johany Quilindo and his coffee for the first time ever this year, despite knowing all of his neighbors. When cupping blind we knew this coffee was from our network of farmers in the area of Inza, based on the floral qualities we have tasted from there, so the next day we set out to Johany's farm there. We found that Johany has about 1 hectare of land with coffee growing at 1700-1900 meters above sea level. He picks, pulps, ferments, washes, and dries all of his own coffee. He has been delivering coffee to our La Plata warehouses for about one year, but this is his first-ever micro lot. Sometimes you're in the right place at the right time, and this coffee is one of our favorite examples of that.
