Coffee Description

Decafs can be tricksy, but this one scored an 86.5 when cupped at origin. It features sweet black cherry and Baker’s chocolate aromas leading into a smooth cup with flavor notes of nougat, anise seed, and red apple sweetness. With soft acidity and a fresh note of cedar in the finish, it definitely delivers!

About Smallholder producers of Mexico

This organic Mountain Water Process coffee comes from the sky-high community of San Pedro Sochiapam in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, courtesy of 351 smallholder farmers. For some farmers in Oaxaca, coffee is their only cash crop (an average of 2-6 bags per season), and payday comes once a year when they sell those beans. They work with agent Ramon Ruiz, who oversees collecting the lots and facilitating their acquisition by importers like Crop to Cup.

With this coffee, Crop to Cup went one step further, paying premium prices to ensure it received the TLC needed to retain superior flavor and character as it underwent the decaffeination process. With the Mountain Water Process, green coffee beans soak in mountain glacier water to dissolve the caffeine. The water is then filtered to remove the caffeine, and the oils are returned to the coffee. The results is a 98% caffeine-free coffee that still tastes amazing.

PT's Coffee Roasting Co.

Topeka Kansas, 1993: an unlikely place and time for one of the most groundbreaking Direct Trade coffee companies in the world to be founded, but that's just what Fred Polzin and Jeff Taylor did. PT's Coffee Roasting Co.'s slogan is, "Without the love, it's just coffee.", and they certainly live up to it. (In fact, Jeff married a Colombian coffee pro, Maritza, now Director of Quality Control for PT's).

PT's Coffee Roasting Co. has won many awards, including Roast Magazine's 2009 "Roaster of the Year" and a 2012 Good Food Award medal. Building on a history so solid, PT's is pushing into the future of the coffee industry with promise and momentum.
