Peru Finca TASTA

Milk chocolate, black cherry, strawberry.

This on-the-wild-side natural-processed coffee symphony launches with aromas of milk chocolate, strawberry, and pineapple. Flavors of black cherry and port lead into a lingering notes of fudge and cinnamon, while juicy, almost syrupy body and ripe pineapple acidity crescendo in the finish.

Meet Edith Meza

Edith Meza was born in the mountains of rural Peru. As a teenager she moved to the coffee-growing Satipo Llaylla province of Chanchamaya, to be close to her mother’s family. When they settled, her mother planted a couple hectares of coffee. Sadly, her mother didn’t live to see those trees begin to produce. But Edith and her younger brother, Ivan, decided to follow that dream. Edith studied farm management and quality control, earning a diploma in exportation.. She says, “I’m completely in love with this product, because you learn every day.”

In 2012, she joined the National Coffee Board and worked behind the scenes at the national specialty coffee competition, learning from renowned Peruvian and international cuppers and buyers. PT’s co-founder (and then-green coffee buyer) Jeff Taylor met Edith there, the same year she trained and performed as a sensory judge during the National Barista Championship. The Mezas are the first coffee farmers in the region to provide benefits to their employees and are working to educate other farmers in the region about sustainable farming practices.

About the Region

Lacy white waterfalls cascade from the western slopes of the Andes into the tropical selva (Amazon Basin) between the Andes and the Pacific coast. Brilliant red, green, and turquoise birds. Verdant green rainforest and steep, rich mountainsides. The valleys of the Chanchamayo region east of Lima produce approximately 40% of the country's coffee.

Here the elevations are high, and coffee is mostly shade-grown. The cooler temperatures result in slower growth and ripening, which yields denser, more flavorful beans. Most coffee growers in the Chanchamayo region are smallholders with an average of 3 hectares of land. Many belong to grower cooperative organizations which give them access to training, processing mills, and certifications. Other producers have their own on-site micro-mills. Many of the coffees are organically grown, and producers partner together to protect the wildlife and biodiversity in their valleys and mountains.
