About Smallholder producers of Nicaragua

For the past three years, Old Soul Co. has directly sourced coffee from the Santa Lucila beneficio (processing mill). This special lot is made up from coffees grown by quality-driven smallholder farmers in the Nueva Segovia region who wet-mill their own coffee but aren’t big enough to finish processing their coffees, and who lack means to export as well.

Instead, they sell their coffee to the owners of Santa Lucila dry mill, the Paguaga family, who pays these neighboring farmers more for their beans than the local co-op rates. At the mill, the green coffee is graded for quality and blended together to create a larger and exportable lot. With 90 years of coffee-growing and processing expertise to their credit, the Paguaga family’s attention to quality and detail produces consistently high quality coffees. They’re committed to supporting neighboring growers with technical and operational expertise through their mill and cupping lab, and giving financial assistance and marketing access not otherwise available.
