The first arrival of the Ethiopian harvest is always exciting, especially from the esteemed Gore Dako station in Agaro. This washed offering is a shining example of the range of coffees from this region, with unique notes of yellow pear and complex Mānuka honey.

About Gore Dako of Ethiopia

Gore Dako opened for its first harvest season this past fall, 2019. It’s location is ideal: found in southern end of Agaro Gera in the same forests that members from Kolla Bolcha and Biftu Gudina farm their coffees, this area is also very close to the border of Goma, home to Duromina and Hunda Oli. We’ve found the coffees have an exceptionally fruited character along the lines of candied citrus and honey, and although this is our first year working with Gore Dako (and their first year operating), we anticipate many gorgeous harvest to come.

Part of the Kata Muduga cooperatives, Gore Dako is part of the larger Agaro region in Jimma, an area that has always formed a core part of the Red Fox menu with relationships extending back even further, over a decade. In 2009 when we first met the people behind the Nano Challa cooperatives, their coffees were flowing into the marketplace undifferentiated and undervalued. Once USAID’s Technoserve project, which focused on improving African coffee farmers’ lives by helping them get better prices for their coffee, established the Nano Challa washing station, we saw the unique character of their coffee and invested in developing relationships with its producers, which have grown stronger to this day. More coops have sprung up over time, and they each contribute a unique character and have their own name recognition and renown. Gore Dako now joins their ranks.

Onyx Coffee Lab

Lest the myth perpetuate that specialty coffee does not come from Arkansas, Onyx Coffee Lab is blowing that particular urban legend out of the water while creating a few of their own. Husband-wife owners Jon and Andrea Allen have rapidly taken the coffee world by storm with their combination of art and science.

The magic starts with sourcing, with countless small sample batches from coffee importers and with direct visits to farms around the world. "I know direct trade means a lot of different things to different people, but for us if we don’t put money in the producers hands we won’t call it direct trade," says Jon. Once found, the coffees are carefully roasted in twenty-pound or smaller batches, then shared with the three Onyx cafés and over 150 wholesale customers in thirty states.

Clearly Onyx Coffee Lab knows what they're doing: this northwest Arkansas matrix of coffee know-how routinely cleans house at the U.S. Coffee Championships; Andrea Allen placed first in the 2020 Barista Championship, while Elika Liftee placed first in the 2020 Brewers Cup Championship, and they both went on to the 2021 World Coffee Championships to place in 2nd place for Barista and 3rd place for Brewers Cup. Onyx has been chosen by Architectural Digest as Arkansas' most beautiful coffee shop, garnered multiple Good Food Awards, and been described as the "Best bags of coffee you can buy online" in GQ.
