About Carlos Roberto Serrano Roa of Guatemala
In 1969, Dr. Carlos Roberto Serrano Roa established a coffee farm high in the mountains of Guatemala and named it after his mother. For more than three decades, he and his family have worked to develop Finca Severa. Currently, 111 acres of the 135-acre estate are in coffee cultivation, with the remaining land in natural forest.
Finca Severa produces a unique mix of varieties including two distinctly Guatemalan cultivars. The estate has its own mill, enabling Dr. Carlos to manage the quality of cherry selection, depulping, fermentation, and drying with meticulous care. Finca Severa’s wastewater is treated before returning it to the environment and coffee pulp converted to organic fertilizer for his trees. The farm is very remote, but Dr. Carlos provides healthcare, housing, education and social activities, enabling his workers to enjoy a dignified quality of life.
