Mantiqueira--“where the mountains cry” from the native Tupi word “amantikir”),is a land of misty mountains, and rushing rivers, and plunging, lacey waterfalls. This micro-region, in which more than 7000 coffee growers collectively produce up to a million bags annually, is located where you would expect--on the slopes of the Mantiqueira Mountains, Minas Gerais side, and bordering São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro states.
Here coffee has a long tradition--children, parents, grandparents all courting the flavor and complexity of this magic bean, pursuing excellence and gaining world recognition for their specialty coffees. So much so that in 2011 Mantiqueira earned its recognition as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) region having its own highly-differentiated sensory profile known for floral and citrus notes, dense and creamy body, medium-bright acidity and a long sweet finish.
