Kenya Tambaya AB

Papaya, starfruit, pomelo.

This coffee has all of the tropical flavors beloved in coffees from Kenya, featuring a caramelized sugar sweetness for balancing tart, slightly sparkling acidity. Tangy papaya up front dives into a syrupy middle, and the finish is clean with a lingering starfruit and pomelo sparkle.

Meet Smallholder producers

This lot is directly sourced from smallholder farmers belonging to the Tambaya wet mill. Tambaya, located in the Mukurwe-ini area of Nyeri county, is part of Rumukia farmers Cooperative society, and the mill derives its name from an indigenous tree common in the area during pre-colonial times, called Mutambaya.

920 small holders make up the membership of Tambaya. The majority of them have an average of 175 coffee trees, and each tree produces about 6 pounds of coffee cherries. Though that doesn’t seem like very much, coffee is the main source of revenue for these farmers. With their earnings they are able to provide education for their children, pay for their health and medical needs, and develop infrastructure including building homes.

Nyeri, Kenya

Coffee from the Nyeri District is sometimes referred to as “the heart of Black Gold Coffee” due to the intensity of flavor packed into slow-developing, very dense beans. Grown in the highlands between the eastern base of the Aberdare Range and the western slopes of Mt Kenya in young volcanic soil and blessed by strategic rainfall, beans develop a classic balanced Kenyan taste profile: fresh fruitiness, crisp citrus, bright and balanced acidity.

Part of Kenya’s rich agricultural sector, the Nyeri region became UTZ certified in 2008, and since then, there has been a tremendous improvement in coffee quality. Smallholders rather than large estates are most common, and most growers belong to cooperative organizations which own processing mills to which members can bring their harvested cherries.

Dapper & Wise

In 2013, Insomnia's owners Evan Aldrete and Tyler Geel launched Dapper & Wise as a tasting room and roasting facility in Portland's Western suburbs, and by 2014, as a wholesaler as well. Although both wear many hats, in general, Evan oversees the roasting operation and Tyler oversees the business end of things.

Based out of Beaverton, Oregon, Evan and Tyler work with a stellar team, all of whom are dedicated to the values that undergird Dapper & Wise: “We want people to walk through our doors and feel welcome. We want people to taste our coffee and be impressed and inspired. We want the coffee we roast to exemplify the hard work of the producers that grow it.”
