About Peru Pangoa, Sumatra Permata Gayo, Ethiopian Sidama of
Fair Trade and organic certified coffees from Ethiopia, Peru, and Sumatra.
In 2006, coffee farmers in the Bener Meriah district formed Permata Gayo Cooperative. Their goal was to guarantee a greater level of quality and traceability for their coffees, and ultimately receive higher premiums as a result. Where once they sent their harvest from Aceh to the port of Belawan to be processed, they are now able to take them from cherry to final export right in their own facilities. This added control over each step of the process enables them to continually improve their quality while facilitating communication and direct sales.
In 1977, 50 coffee growers from San Martin de Pangoa split from a larger, older co-op in Satipo due to the distance between the two towns. By the early 80s, that membership had grown to almost 1,700 members. These farmers were building a bright future together, reinvesting into their infrastructure and forging ahead with coffee quality. But the 80s also ushered in 20 years of terror as militants ravaged the area, forcing many farmers fto leave their farms to avoid the violence. Those days are thankfully behind them now, and Pangoa’s membership has rebuilt to 654, 145 of these being women.
Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (SCFCU) was founded in 2001 to represent coffee producing cooperatives located throughout the Sidama Zone of southern Ethiopia both locally and in international markets. Today, SCFCU has grown to represent 51 cooperatives and more than 76,000 small-scale farmer families — making SCFCU the second largest Coffee Farmer Cooperative Union in Ethiopia.
