Coffee Description
This new micro-lot is our last Bolivian drop of the season - a unique Gesha from Celso Mayta. As a washed Gesha expect very clean and complex floral and stone fruit aromas. On the palate, it is silky and sweet with flavors of apricot jam, elderflower, apple with a honey-sweetness finish.

About Celso Mayta of Bolivia
Celso Mayta's farm is called Finca Golondrina (Swallow's Farm), after the swallows that fly in the sky above his coffee trees. It is located in Zona Illimani, Colonia Copacabana, Caranavi Province of Bolivia.
Celso is an inspiration for other coffee growers. In 2004, things were not going so well -- Celso was ready to burn his coffee trees, which he had worked with his family since he was three years old, and was prepared to grow coca leaves instead. Growing coca is legal in Bolivia and is a centuries-old Andean tradition. “Bolivian coffee was exported with a 20% discount because quality was poor and unpredictable. I didn't know what quality meant, so out of curiosity I decided to attend some classes about improving coffee growing practices." What he learned paid off. In 2005, he decided to participate in the second Bolivia Cup of Excellence competition. His coffee submission came in second place, and Celso sold the lot in the international auction for $17,000 (six times what he would have received in the domestic market). With the money, he tripled the acreage of his coffee plantings.
“What is the secret to winning top prizes? It is very basic but we only select the matured cherries and process them in a clean mill. Also, I try not to use chemical fertilizers or pesticides because they worsen the taste. I pull out the weeds by hand. I hope that my coffee will continue to reach customers all over the world.”
Celso Mayta recently got a new drying machine to achieve a stabler and more consistent drying process. This year he focussed on producing washed process coffee as he foresees more demand despite having 40% less water. He is planting more shade trees at his farm since he noticed how important it is to have shadow for the coffee and be less sensitive to those climate changes.
