About Smallholder producers of Uganda

Mt. Elgon is said to be the heart of Ugandan coffee production, and within that area, Uganda’s most sought-after washed coffees tend to come from the Buzabiti area. This high-scoring lot is courtesy of smallholder members of the Bulaago Farmers' Association, (Bulaago being a village in the district). 140 farmers strong, each produces an average of 5-6 bags of exportable specialty coffee annually.

War, lack of infrastructure, and low prices have plagued the coffee industry in Uganda, but as specialty coffee buyers began vying for the best lots from Mt. Elgon, growers have more incentive to up their quality, top-notch washing stations have become more numerous, and technical expertise from other coffee origins have made a huge difference for growers here. In addition, there is a system created by the Bulaago Project which compensates farmers for taking the extra care needed to produce top quality coffee.

Old Soul Co.

Started by Tim Jordan and Jason Griest in an obscure alley in Sacramento in 2006, Old Soul Co. has grown rapidly but still enthusiastically shares the same vision thirteen years later: "celebrate the artisan aspects of bread baking and coffee roasting and dedicate ourselves to getting better at our crafts everyday!"

Old Soul's coffee sourcing practices set them apart: owner Jason Griest travels to as many of the farms growing Old Soul's coffees as possible. In Sacramento, Old Soul is deeply involved in volunteering and giving back to the community. The roasting company has received many 90+ and "Best Of" awards over the past years.
